Got to Train with the man who is credited for Developing Gracie Jiu-Jitsu
April 11th 2003
Rio De Janeiro, Brazil- Gracie Humaita Jiu-Jitsu Academia
As part of a small group of American practitioners, I had the rare opportunity to train directly with Helio Gracie during an exclusive two-hour private lesson.

Helio Gracie was one of the most influential martial artists in history and is widely recognized as a founder and pioneer of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

For martial artists, training with Helio Gracie was considered a rare privilege because it meant learning directly from one of the individuals responsible for creating and shaping Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Since 2001, I have made multiple trips to Brazil to study Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at its source. Training with top instructors and immersing myself in the culture of the art has enabled me to bring valuable techniques, traditions, and real-world experience back to my students.
After teaching martial arts in Allendale and Franklin Lakes, New Jersey for many years, I opened my Ramsey location in 2013, continuing my commitment to helping students build confidence, discipline, and real martial arts skills.

In 2009, I was honored to be promoted to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt by Royler Gracie, one of the most accomplished members of the legendary Gracie family.

In July 2002, I competed in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championship (Mundial) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At that time, the tournament was held at the historic Tijuca Tênis Clube, long before the event moved to California. Competing in Brazil during the early years of the sport gave me firsthand experience with the traditions and origins of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

While training in Brazil, I frequently had the privilege of training with Saulo Ribeiro, a legendary competitor, world champion, and 6th-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. His technical approach and commitment to excellence had a lasting influence on my development as both a practitioner and instructor.

In addition to teaching martial arts to children and adults, I have spent many years providing defensive tactics instruction to police officers, sharing practical techniques designed to enhance officer safety and control in high-pressure situations.

At Stevens Martial Arts, we believe martial arts training should prepare students for success in everyday life — not just on the mat.
That’s why our program goes far beyond kicks, takedowns, and techniques.
Alongside martial arts training, students participate in leadership and communication development
designed to help them become stronger, more confident individuals in school, at home, and in social situations.
